Question

The tire shown to the right is typical of the type of tire that you have on your car. When properly installed and inflated, the interior volume of this tire is 0.025 m3 and the pressure is 35 psig. Every morning before you go to work, you check your tire pressure at the Sheetz located one block from your house to make sure it is 35 psig. And every morning you find that the air pressure is 31 psig. So you add air to increase the pressure to 35 psig, and then you get on the freeway and drive 45 miles to where you work. When you get to your office, you check your tire pressure and find out that it is 41 psig. So you remove some air from the tire to lower the pressure back to 35 psig. Before you get in your car at the end of the workday, you check the tire pressure and find that it is 31 psig. Again, you add air to the tire to get the pressure up to 35 psig and then you drive home. When you get home you check your tire pressure and find that it is back up to 41 psig. So again you remove air to get the pressure back to 35 psig. The next day, this sequence of events repeats itself. 1. Explain in words why this is happening. 2. Making reasonable and appropriate assumptions, estimate the mass of air that you are adding to your tire in the morning. 3. If you were to fill your tires with helium instead of air, would this change anything? You must explain your answer in words and with appropriate equations.
