Question
Compute the flexible pavement truck factor using the AASHTO method for the following
vehicle. Assume a SN of 3 and a terminal serviceability of 2.5.
I am having a hard time uploading the image, so it's a truck with a single axle (2 tires) in the front, then two tandem axles(8 tires each) supporting the trailer . There is 12 kips loaded onto the front single axle. 196 inches behind the front axle is the first tandem axle, and that is 30.4 kips applied to it. 492 inches behind the first tandem axle is the back tandem axle, which has a P=36.2 kips applied to it.
Explanation / Answer
Given:
Type of Pavement: Flexible
Type of Axle : One Single Axle & 2 Tandem Axle
SN = 3
Terminal Servicability = 2.5
Based on Table following Table, Load Equivalency Factor can be computed.
Table 1. Some Typical Load Equivalency Factors
Load due to single axle : 12kips : 12000lbs
Load due to Tandem Axle : 36.2 kips : 36200 lbs
On interpolatin the acting loads, we get
Equivalency Factor for Single Axle : 0.236
Equivalency Factor for Tandem Axle : 0.819
