Question

3, (20 pts) Consider an air mass of temperature of 30°C and relative humidity 60% rising from sea surface (1000 mb) to 8 km in the (standard) atmosphere (pressure decreases with altitude approximately 100mb per kilometer, temperature lapse te 6.5K km). Find the height of cloud-base where air temperature is equa to dew-point temperature. If the conversion efficiency of water vapor in the clouds to precipitation is 5%, and the convection lasts 2 hours with average updraft velocities of 1 m s, what would be the total precipitation?

Explanation / Answer

The closer T is to D, the higher the humidity. T=D means the air is 100% saturated. When T gets close to D usually means low clouds and fog.

that means, Temp - dew point=humidity

dew point=temp - humidity

              =30 - .60

              =29.4

cloud base height= ((temperature - dew point) / 4.5) * 1000

                         =( 30 - 29.4 /2.5 )* 1000

                         = 240 ft
