Question

Problem 1 A WT 7 section of ASTM A992 steel is attached to a wide gusset plate with fillet welds deposited by shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) using E70XX electrodes. The welds are 18-in in length along each side; no weld is placed across the member end. Assume that the gusset plate has adequate strength and is ASTM A572 Grade 50 steel. Service dead load and live load are indicated in the figure below. Determine the suitable WT section and weld size necessary, and indicate the value of the limiting member design strength, Pn.

Explanation / Answer

Service dead load = 100kips

Service liove load = 200 kips

Factored load = (1.2*100)+(1.6*200)=440 kips

minimum area of cross section of WT7 needed = 440/(0.9*50)=9.78 in2

Let us consider WT7x34 which has a gross area of 9.99 in2

Length of weld =18"*2=36"

We know,per AISC ,Weld strength is given by 1.392DL

1.392*D*36 = 440

D=8.78

Theoritically we need ,9/16" fillet weld. Flange thickness of WT7x34=0.72(>9/16)

Therefore,weld can be accomodated

Therefore. use WT7x34 and 9/16 weld

Design strength of weld=1.392*9*36=451 kips

Design strength of WT7x34 = 0.9*50*9.99=449.55 kips

Therefore ,the axial strength of connection in tension is 449.55 kips
