Question
Calculations 1. Calculate the Allowable load (Tons) of an 8 % inch steel pipe pile filled with concrete Allowable Load (Tons) P-[(o.soF,A) (0.33F 4)/2000b om 8.625 0.375 Diam. of Pipe OD (inch) Wall Thickness of Pipe (inch) Allowable Steel Stress Fy (PSI) Concrete Strength fc (PSI) Amount of corrosion (inch) 36,000 4,000 0.0625 2. If the design engineer specifies piles with an allowable load of 100 tons, does this pile meet the requirements? 3. If so does this pile from the wave analysis graph Fig I attached stay below the limit of 40ksi compressive stress and also meet the Ultimate Load Capacity of 400kips with-in a reasonable number of blows per foot (blow count) around 200?Explanation / Answer
In question 1 we will follow pile dimensions given as
Outer dia of pile = 8.625 "
Wall thickness = 0.375"
Thus inner dia of steel = outer dia of concrete = 8.625-0.375 = 8.25"
Thus area of steel = (8.625^2 -8.25^2)/4 = 4.97 in^2
Area of concrete = 8.25^2 /4 = 53.456 in^2
Thus allowable load in tons as per formula given in question above
P= (0.5*36000*4.97 +0.33*4000*53.456)/2000 = 80.01 tons
Answer 2
Allowable load specified by design engineer = 100 tons
Allowable load calculated above = 80.01 tons
Thus as 80.01 < 100 , hence the pile does not meet requirements
