Question
What is the difference between a relay and a contactor? What it the difference between a contactor and a starter? What should be done with a defective relay? Are magnetic overloads fattened to a starter? What effect would a loose connection have on a bimetal overload? What effect would a loose connection have on a magnetic overload? Which of the following overloads is not affected by ambient temperature: solder-pot, bimetal, or magnetic? What is the difference between a relay and a potential relay? What is the contact surface of a typical contactor made of?Explanation / Answer
1. Difference between relay and contractor are both relay and contractor are electromagnetic switches. Contractor is a switching device and it will not provide protection contractor is used to make or break circuit. Whereas relay is a protection device. It provides protection against Overload. Generally Contactors are used for high voltage switching purposes whereas relays are used for low voltage switching.
2.The difference between contractor and starter is a contractor is very similar to the starter in design and operation. Both contractor and starter have the same feature of operating contacts when the coil is energized. The major difference between contactors and starters is the starter use a overload heater element for protecting the motor from over load and over heating.
4. yes the magnetic overload relays are faster than starter because it protects the motor quickly from any overload.
5.Overheat will have a loose connection on a solder pot overload.
7. Overheat will have a loose connection on a magnetic overload.
8. The magneticoverload device is not affected by ambient temperature.
9.A relay mainly has two main contacts. One is Normally open and other is normally closed and it also has a coil. A potential relay is one whose coil is set to be activated by voltage. The potential relays have different voltage settings depending on that voltage setting the coil will be energised and the contacts will open or open. Simillarly a current relay is one type of relay whose coil is set to be activated by current levels.
10. The contact surafce of a typical contractor is made off silver cadmium oxide.
