Question

PRACTICE QUESTIONS 1. Technician A says that an interaxle differential lock should be used to lock out differential action between the wheels on either side of a drive axle. Technician B says that an activated interaxle differential locks out differ- ential action between the forward and rear axles on a tandem drive configuration. Who is correct? a. Technician A only b. Technician B only c. both A and B d. neither A nor B her torque at the differ- 2. Which of the following ential carrier? a. double reduction axle b. two-speed axle c. tandem drive axle d. differential gear set 17

Explanation / Answer

1. What the technical A says it is true because the differential use is relate the both wheels of a drive axle. on the other hand, an activated inter axle differential does not neccesary locks out differential action because differential lock is controlled by a lever or push-pull control valve on the instrument panel.

So the answer is A

2. To find the greater gear reduction the better is the double reduction axle because it have two stages of reductions.

Answer A

3. When people use the wrong fluid in differentials (happens all the time), the only way to clean it is to use a thinner oil. Kerosene is an oil, but very thin and does the job well. Cleaning up an oil with an oil is the safest way to keep lubrication, if possible. Also It is a good practice change the lubricant after the first 3000 linehaul.

Answer c

4. The wheel that is allowed to spin out will have four times greater power (Not neccesarily rpm) than if four wheel where turning. Differential spinout occurs when one wheel remains stationary while the other wheel is spinning. The speed difference between the planetary gears causes heat; when the heat becomes excessive it can cause galling on the spider journals and star gear bores. In some cases, enough heat is generated to weld the star gear to the spider and cause catastrophic failure spinout – this commonly occurs when starting off or travelling on a slippery surface

Answer b

5. When the axle oil level is low, the friction between the parts generates heat, the parts become galled, the oil burnt and the axle fails. There are not related to the high centrifugal forces. Not neccesary differential carriers increase the input speed.

Answer d

6. A hypoid gear incorporates some sliding and can be considered halfway between a straight-cut gear and a worm gear. Special gear oilsare required for hypoid gears because the sliding action requires effective lubrication under extreme pressure between the teeth.

Answer d

7. When coupling there should never be a gap between the trailer upper coupler and the fifth wheel.

Answer c

8. Special gear oils are required for hypoid gears because the sliding action requires effective lubrication under extreme pressure between the teeth.

Answer A

9.  In a full floating axle system, the drive shafts in a front wheel drive independent suspension system do not support any vehicle weight.

Answer b

10. Lift axles are also known as "cheater axles," because unscrupulous truckers raise them or reduce air pressure on them while running loaded. Also, a non-steerable lift axle needs to be raised prior to turning a tight corner, or its tires will plow asphalt and scrub concrete, and will scuff tire tread and impose high lateral stress on wheels and chassis components.
