Question

Although most of us despise the English system of units, we often need to use this system when working in the air pollution business. A mixture of air and methyl cyanide at five times the OSHA PEL flows through a 9-inch inner diameter duct at an average speed of 1200 ft/min (FPM). The pressure in the duct is 3.50 atmospheres, and the temperature is 85.0 o C.

(a) Calculate the actual bulk volume flow rate in units of ACFM.

(b) Calculate the standard bulk volume flow rate in units of SCFM.

(c) Calculate the bulk mass flow rate in lbm per minute.

(d) Calculate the mass concentration of methyl cyanide in the duct, in units of lbm per cubic foot.

(e) Calculate the mass flow rate of the methyl cyanide alone, in units of lbm per minute.

(f) Suppose that all of this methyl cyanide eventually exits to the atmosphere. If the plant runs continuously, how much methyl cyanide is released into the atmosphere in one year in units of lbm and in units of tons? (1 ton = 2000 lbm)

Explanation / Answer

According to given data actual bulk volume of ACFM is 6754.19

and the standard flow rate in SCFM is 22944.7

this can be calculated by using the formula = Q= 60*pie*v*(d/2)2

and the mass flow rate is m= 144PQ/RTZ

where R is the compressibility factor =1

T is the temperature

Q is ACFM

and P is pressure

substituting all values we get

m = 361lbm/min
