Question

Consider a concentric tube heat exchanger with hot and cold water inlet temperatures of 200 and 35degreeC, respectively. The flow rates of the hot and cold fluids arc 42 and 84 kg/h, respectively. Assume the overall heat transfer coefficient is 180 W/m^2 K. For the purpose of looking up the properties of water, you can also estimate temperatures of cold and hot outlets to be approximately 85degreeC and 100degreeC, respectively (Note that Appendix I has properties of water in both metric and British units. Be sure to use the correct table.) What is the maximum heat transfer rate that can be achieved for the prescribed inlet conditions? If the exchanger is operated in counterflow' with a heat transfer area of 0.33 m^2, determine the outlet fluid temperatures.
