Question

Hi. I'm working on my prelab and am completelyconfused. I don't know if I am missing data or if I justreally don't understand what is going on. This week we arewith the speed of sound. We are using a resonance tube thatis open at one end and closed at the other. Here is aquestion from the prelab and if anyone can help me with it I wouldbe so grateful and if you could explain it to me on how to figureit out that would be even greater!

Here it is:
If the length of the tube used in our experiment is 4m (closed atone end), how many resonances would you observe when a tuning forkof frequency 256 Hz is used?

I am at a loss. Thanks so much.

Explanation / Answer

When the one side of the tube is closed then n                             n/2 = L                                = 2L / n                             v / f = 2L / n                               n = 2Lf / v ................. (1) Here L = 4m         f = 256 Hz         v = speed of thesound = 331 m/s Then n = 6.2            =6
