QUESTION 4 4.1 As a newly appointed geotechnical engineer on a highway bridge project, you have been tasked in preparing the geotechnical report. Briefly describe and discuss what information is required for the preparation and presentation of the report 4.2 Piles may be divided into two main categories according to their method of installation. Briefly discuss these two categories in your own words. [41 4.3 The purpose of identifying the layers of deposits that underlie a proposed structure and their physical characteristics is generally referred to as subsurface exploration. What are the key tasks you will be required to undertake as the geotechnical engineer to obtain information for the subsurface exploration?Explanation / Answer
And 1-as a geotechnical engineer the main and most important task is to explore the soil at which the bridge has to be placed.it also depends on the locality where the structure has to built up like a canyans or over rivers or streams.according to that strength measures are taken like bearing capacity of soil depth for abutment and different group index and grain properties of soils.these all things are written in a chronological manner as per the work done on the field.the report comprise of few important things given here.
Grain characteristics,Group index properties,Shear strength, bearing capacity ,type of soil etc
Ans2-pile are divided into two categories as per the method of installation given below:
Displacement piles -if large volumes of soils gets upward and displaced laterally during installation it is called as displacement pile.example-driven piles
Nondisplacement piles-it doesn't lead to any displacement at all.examlpe-bored cast in situ piles
Ans3 for the safe and economic design of structure it is important to have the knowledge of subsoil condition which require some useful operations to collect vital information for the assessment which are mentioned below.
Preliminary stage which contains site geological study of site and site survey
Detailed stage which comprises of nature thickness sequence physical properties water table which is obtained by boring and proper sampling.
