Question
I don't think I'm picturing how this problem works quite rightso I don't really know where to start. This is exactly how it looksin the text book.
A 63kg canoeist stands in the middle of her 22kg canoe. The canoeis 3.0 m long, and the end that is closest to land is 2.5m from theshore. The canoeist now walks toward the shore until she comes tothe end of her canoe. (a) When the canoeist stopsat the end of her canoe, is her distnace from the shore equal to,greater than, or less than 2.5m? Explain. (b)Verify your answer to part (a) by calculating the distance from thecanoeist to the shore.
Ch 9 general prob. 63
Chapter 9 has a little bit of center of mass material near theend.
Explanation / Answer
when the canoeist walks towards the shore, the canoe will awayfrom the shore accroding to conservation momentum. so her distance from the shore is greater than2.5m (b) place the origin at the center of the canoe before thecanoe before the canoeist walks towards the shore. Xcm = 0 it is not change because no external force an xcomponent acting on the system. assume the canoeist walks in the +ve direction . afterthe canoeist walks to the end of the canoe, the distance betweenthe canoeist and the canoes center of mass is xM -xm = 1.5m where xM and xmrepresent the component of the center of mass for the canoeist andthe canoe. Xcm = 0 = mxm+MxM/m+M = mxm + M(xm+1.5m) rearranging xm = - (1.5m)(M/m+M) plug values M= 63kg , m = 22kg we get xm = -1.1m xM = -1.1m+1.5m = 0.4m the distance between the systems center of mass and the shoreis 3/2 +2.5m = 4m the canoeist from the shore is 4.0m - 0.4m = 3.6mRelated Questions
