Question

will give a lifesaver definitely. Please answer as quickly aspossible.
The following is a lab manual's question for one of the first labsin electromagnetism.

We have 2 charge producers A and B. If we insert A into the icepail, the electrometer reads 30 volts. If we withdraw A and insertB, it reads -15 volts. Then we rub them together , which causes atransfer of charge. This time we insert A, the reading becomes 42volts. What will be the reading if we insert B into the pail?

I have a partial solution but would still need to have it verified. The solution I have worked on is the following.
1)We use law of conservation of charge. That is total charges ofboth A and B (the system) is equal both in the beginning and in theend.
2) To find charge from Voltages, we use the equation q=CV
3) C is assumed to be unknown and same and thus is cancelled outfor both A and B in the beginning and in the end.
Please verify by submitting the entire solution

Explanation / Answer

Ok so we have Va= 30 Vb = -15 conservation of energy Vt = Va + Vb Since at the end we are finding out what the electrometerreads with both charge producers in the pail. The read will be Vtdue to conservation of energy. Hope this makes sence. Vt =15V
