Question

I am still getting a wrong answer for the ratio for the escape speed.  The given solution doesnt provide answers, but just examples using the values for Earth and Mars.  When the problem in the book uses unknown planets in which only their radii are known.  For the escape speed ratio I tried taking the ratio between the two planet's radii and multiplying that by the given ratio of the mass, but this didn't work.  How do I find the ratio of escape speeds of planet A to that of planet B if all is given is a radius of 9.7e3 km for planet A and a radius for planet B of 1.4e4 km.  and the given ratio of their masses is 0.5?

Explanation / Answer

This is what I did but i cannot say for sure if it iscorrect. we are trying to find ratio of the escape velocity. The equation for which is v=(2GM/r). This is an theexample from cramster. we are given R1= 9.7e3km and R2 = 1.4e4km and the ratio is .5or 1:2 V1 = 2G*1/9.7e3) V2 = 2G*2/1.4e4) and simply V1/V2 is your ratio. Hope this helps
