Question

The light travels from diamond (n1 = 2:4) to some material withrefractive index unknown (n2), inthis

material the light makes an angle of 45with thenormal, then it enters a liquid with refractiveindex

n3 = 1:33, where it makes an angle of 75with thenormal. Find:

a) The refractive index n2

1

b) The incident angle of light in thediamond

c) Find the incident angle neccessary that the light doesnot enter the liquid

Explanation / Answer

from snell's law sin i / sin r = n 3 / n 2 given angle of incidence i = 45 degrees angle of refraction r = 75 degrees refractive index of diamond n 3 = 1.33 substitue values we get sin 45 / sin 75 = 1.33 / n2 from this index of refraction of liquid n 2= 1.33* ( sin 75 / sin 45 )                                                               = 1.8168 (b) . in this case sin i ' / sin r ' = n 2 / n1 angle of refraction r ' = 45 degrees refractive index of diamond n 1 = 2.4                                           n 2 = 1.8168 So, incident angle in the diamond i ' = 32.36degrees
