Question
This is problem #67 from chapter 24 of Giancoli's Physics, 6thEdition. My friend here says to use the formula forconstructive interference, but it seems to me that the destructiveformula should be used instead. After converting thefrequency in hz to wavelength, which formula do i use to calculatethe theta values?A teacher stands well back from an outside dooorway 0.88 mwide, and blows a whistle of frequency 750 Hz. Ignoringreflections, estimate at what angle (s) it is not possible to hearthe whistle clearly on the playground outside the doorway.
Explanation / Answer
=v/f, where v=345 m/s diffraction 0 will occur at: sin = n*/a = n * v/(fa) = n (345)/(750*.88) =.522n n=1 gives sin = .522 and =31degrees. The largest n can be is 1 because sin cannot be greater than 1
