Question
Respond / critique this persons thoughts on equipment selection for a jobEquipment Selection, I believe that cost is probably the first consideration when selecting equipment for an activity on a job site. Then it begins to get narrowed downed by size of the job and requirements from the plans and specifications. No one wants to pay for more than they need to get a job done. I have had to think of these considerations on some projects that I have been a part of. Just as the phases of construction go on so do the equipment needs such as excavation how much and what equipment is needed, amount of concrete and size of concrete equipment to get it to the sight, how do I move materials to the sight and so on. I work on smaller projects as a residential contractor though I do get to analyze situations and decide on the best course of action. Sometimes the total cost of the equipment may be reduced by using a bigger piece of equipment such as a front end loader versus a bobcat. The initial cost will be more but, you can save time and money getting it done sooner moving the whole project along more quickly. Explanation / Answer
No doubt, the cost benefit analysis must be given the priority but investing a lot of money for smaller projects is not a smart deal. For small project focus must be given on effective use of the already available equipment rather investing money for newer one without making analysis of its future use. One must also take in due consideration that whether skilled operator is available or not, whether spare parts of the equipment are locally available or not because all these factors play a deciding role in cost benefit analysis. The economic life and the obsolescence period of the equipment must also be taken into account.
