Question

You to try to create your own artificial electron chain using the molecules C, D, F, G, and H. The redox potentials of these molecules, along with those for NADH and water, are given below. Order the molecules from 1 to 5, in the order they would be used in an electron transport chain, from those that has the lowest affinity for electron (= # 1) to those with the greatest affinity for electrons (= #5). C D F G H Would the electron transport chain you create using molecules C, D, F, G, and H be able to donate an electron to molecular oxygen to create water (like what happens in the mitochondria)? Explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

Electron affinity is said to gaining of electrons by an atom. The redox potential for oxidation of a molecule i.e. reduction potential should be more negative. The high negative reduction potential tells that an atom has high power to lose an electron; that will help to ease the oxidation of a molecule. And this is true for oxidation potential as vice-versa. The greatest affinity of molecule will be of highest positive redox potential. On the basis of that the scores are:

The redox potential of all molecules= 22+925-233-172+433= 975 mV

This can easily help the oxygen molecule to make a molecule of water because the water formation reaction needs 820mV which is lower than the overall redox potential from all molecules C, D, F, G, and H.
