Consider the following information and data to answer the questions that follow A study was done to investigate the occurrence of cold sores, caused by HSV, among cigarette smokers as compared to E-cigarette users. The study was performed over a 4 year period among 1000 cigarette smokers and 2000 E-cigarette users. At the beginning of the study each individual was screened to verify the presence of latent HSV, an incurable infection. Total cases Year of E-cigarette study Cigarette 20 30 2 105 40

Explanation / Answer

During 2nd year the percentage of HSV infected smokers [total number of smokers is 1000]

= (40/1000) x 100 = 4%

During 2nd year the percentage of HSV infected E-cigarette users [total number of E-cigarette users is 2000]

= (105/2000) x 100 = 5.25% for 1000 people it should be divided by 2 i.e. 5.25/2 =2.625%

So smokers are more prevalent of HSV infection than E-cigarette users.
