Question

a torpedo fired from a submerged submarine is propelled through thewater with a speed of 20.00 m/s and explodes upon impact with atarget 2000.0 m away. if the sound of the impact is heard 101.4 safter the torpedo was fired, what is the speed of sound inwater?(because the torpedo is held at a constant speed by itspropeller, the effect of water resistance can be neglected.)

thank you for helping me
i actaully already posted this one but did not understand how theygot to the answer can somebody please explain it

Explanation / Answer

Speed of torpedo   v = 20 m / s Let the speed of sound in water be V Distance of the target   S = 2000 m time of impact T = 101.4 s Time taken by torpedo to reach the target +sound taken to reach from target to submarine = 101.4 s                                 ( S / v ) + ( S / V ) = 101.4 s                                  ( 2000 / 20 ) + ( 2000 / V ) = 101.4                                                          2000 / V = 101.4 - 100                                                                           =1.4 from this speed of sound in water   V = 2000 /1.4                                                         = 1428.57 m / s
