Question

Given the electromagnetic wave:

B = +cE0 sin(k y t) ˆi.

a) What happens to the ratio of the electric tomagnetic field if the angular velocity of the
wave is decreased? Does it decrease, increase, or remain thesame?

My guess: Since v= /k, decreasing would decrease v. So, if E/B = v, and v is decreasing, E/B alsodecreases. I think the ratio decreases.

b) What happens to the velocity of thewave if the angular velocity of the wave is decreased? Doesthe velocity decrease, increase, or remain the same?

My guess: Since v=/k, velocity decreases as decreases. I think the velocity decreases.

c) What happens to the the wavelength ofthe wave if the angular velocity of the wave is
decreased? Does the wavelength decrease, increase, or remain thesame?

My guess: Wavelength is inversely related toangular velocity by /c = 2*/. So, if angularvelocity decreases, the wavelength increases. I think thewavelength increases.

Explanation / Answer

No, my guess on Part A was incorrect. The ratioE/B does not decrease if decreases. Why doesn't it?
