Question
A car is traveling down a hill that makes an angle of 12° with the horizontal. The driver applies herbrakes, and the wheels lock so that the car begins to skid. Thecoefficient of kinetic friction between the tires and the road isK = 0.52 (a) Find the acceleration of the car.1 m/s2
(b) How long does the car take to skid to a stop if its initialspeed is 27 mph (12 m/s)?
2 m
Thank you so much for any help, it is greatlyappreciated!! (a) Find the acceleration of the car.
1 m/s2

Explanation / Answer
A classmate helped and I thought I'd share it here.... (A) Sum of F_x = mgsin12 - F = m * a =mgsin12 - N = m *a m cancelsout... =g(sin12) - (gcos12) = a = (9.8)sin12 - .52 (-9.8)cos12 = a = - 2.94 m/s ^2 (B) now, to find the distance, we first found the time... t = 12/ -2.94 = - 4.08 Then , Drawing a velocity - time graph, we solved for distanceusing the area of a triangle from the v - t graph.... A= .5 (t) (12) = .5 (-4.08) (12) = 24 m
