Question

Need some help figuring out exercise 5.8 in Chapter 5.

The problem is this:

A skier starts from rest at the top of a frictionless incline ofheight 20.0m, as in Figure 5.19. At the bottom of the incline. theskier encounters a horizontal surface where the coefficient ofkinetic friction between the skis and snow is 0.210. (a) Find theskier's speed at the bottom. (b) How far does the skier travel onthe horizontal surface before coming to rest?

The book works this part out and I understand it for the most part. However after it explains, it asks another question, however offersno explanation on how to get to the answer. The question I amhaving trouble working out the answer to is :

Find the horizontal distance the skier travels before coming torest if the incline also has a coefficient of kinetic frictionequal to 0.210. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Explanation / Answer

   when there also friction on the incline thatis    k = 0.210    then the speed of the skier at the bottomthat B will be    vB = 12.879 m / s    then the horizonatal distance travelled willbe    d = vB2 / 2 (0.210)(9.80)       = ........ m
