Question

Choose two specific proteins from the following categories (enzyme, structural, protein hormone, receptor, transport proteins & carriers, motor proteins, signal pathway proteins.) For each of these two proteins, imagine that duplication and divergence of the gene encoding the protein has led to the evolution of a different form of the protein. Use your imagination and creativity to hypothesize a benefit that might arise in this manner. (E.g., amylase is a salivary enzyme and can digest starch. One can imagine an alternative form of amylase which is heat resistant, so that it can digest starch even when the food is boiling hot. This, of course, is a whimsical example. Try to think of serious examples. This is an exercise in creativity.

Explanation / Answer

Motor proteins and signal pathway proteins.

Motor protein- Recent molecular genetic experiments have revelaed important genes like KIF2A,Kinesin, a family motor involved in microtubule depolymerization. This gene can function in a different way wherein if it involves in trnscriptional regulation and brings about the survival of the kinesis. The polymerization of the microtubule also can be initiated by Kinesin.

Signal pathway proteins:A cascade of proteins are involved her for the process to occur. It involves changes of protein-protein interaction within the cell induced by an externalsignal. Many growth factors bind to the receptors at the cell surfaceand stimulate cells to progress through the cell cycle and divide. If these proteins are involved in a decascading process, then the whole process will be reversed and the cell can lead to apoptosis. It is a process which does not occur naturally.
