Question
Stability analysis of a slope that you have undertaken for a proposed LRT project in an area with Champlain sea clay soil has shown that the factor of safty is low. The slope is close to a residential area where flattening (of side slopes) is not possible because of space restrictions. Your boss however has asked you to provide a couple of alternatives to improve the safety of this slope. What are the various suggestions that you propose to improve the slope stability. Supplement your answer with sketches if necessary.
Explanation / Answer
In above case LRT Project is proposed in Residential Area where offset available is less to flaten the slope. In this Situation best solution for stabilising slope is by soil Nailing. In Soil Nailing we reinforce the soil without disturbing it with the help of tension carrying soil nail. The basic principal of soil nailing is reinforcing the slope with closely spaced passive inclusion to increase the shear strength of insitu slope to restrain it's displacement.Soil nail may be of either mettalic or polymeric material, and either grouted into a predrilled hole or inserted using a displacement technique.
The other solution can be use of Geosynthetics in slope. because of steep slope high gravity force will act on slope which unstabilise the slope so if we can do some provision which bound the soil particle and balance the gravity force, that provision is achieved by using Geosynthetics not only for strengthing but also for drainage and membrane which deviate the path of water and prevent soil to become loose.
