Question

I got this answer wrong on my first exam and it's becuase I don't know the value for m? How do I even begin to calculate it? Can I get some explanationg on this problem? I'm much more interested in learning than the answer because I have an exam on this material.Overall, if you provide clear steps on how to attain m and give a clear explanation, I'll give you the points. Please try to be clear, as I'm trying to follow your work.

Thank you in advance.

Two glass slides (n glass = 1.5) of length L = 4.5cm are in contract at one end and separated by a spacer of thickness d on the other to form a wedge as shown. The wedge is filled with water (nw = 1.33). The slider are illuminated perpendicularly from above by a light of wavelength lambda = 550nm. The fringe separation is 1.5 mm in the interface pattern of dark fringes observed in the reflected light. (The dark fringes would be a series of lines running parallel to the width of the slides.) Is the fringe at the slides' line of contact dark or bright? why? What is the thickness of the spacer?

Explanation / Answer

a. youer expalnation for a is correct

b. 2nt = mL

t = 1.5* 550nm/(2* 1.33)

t = 3.10 *10^-7 m

m= 1.5 as this is destuctive interfrernce of ist order
