Question

Anatomy & Physiology: John drinks a shot of whiskey to celebrate his achievement of climbing to the top of the mountain. Alcohol stimulates hydrochloric acid secretion in the stomach and suppresses secretion of ADH. What do you expect to happen to John's respiratory rate and the volume and the pH of his urine? Explain. Explain.

Explanation / Answer

The respiratory rate increases due to the presence of less amount of oxygen on the mountain top hence body requires more oxygen to breathe which could be compensated by high breathing rate.

The main function of ADH hormone is to reabsorption of water from the urine to the body thus preventing more water loss through urine. As it's secretion is suppressed it will lead to more release of water from body to through urine thus increasing the amount and volume of Urine formation.

As the alcohol increases the HCL secretion from stomach it release more H(+) ions in the urine making it more acidic in nature thus the pH of the urine decreases below 7..
