Question

If all of the ion pairs are collected in the last example, what is the current?

This is the last example from the book.

Example Calculate the first-collision dose to tissue hydrogen per unit fluence of 5-MeV neu trons. Solution The density of H atoms is N= 5.98 × 1022 cm-3 (Table 12.3) and the cross section for scattering 5-MeV neutrons is = 1.61 × 10-24 cm2 (Fig. 9.2). The mean energy loss per collision, Qing-2.5 MeV, is one-half the incident neutron energy. The dose per unit neutron fluence from collisions with hydrogen is therefore (tissue density = 1 gcm-3) 5.98 x 1022 cm"3 x 1.61 × 10-24 cm 2 × 2.5 MeV 1 gcm-3 NoQwg D= 1.6 × 10-13 J MeV-1 10-3 k851 = 3.85 × 10-11 Gy cm 2. (12.31)

Explanation / Answer

The current is formed by the out going ions

Here Q=n*e=5.98*1022*1.6*10-19

=9.56*103C

I=Q/t=9.56 *103C/s

=9.56kA
