Question
A box with mass m = 50 kg is lying flat on the ground and is pushed by three people in three different directions (see figure 1). Assuming that there is no friction and that the box was initially at rest find the following:
A What is the net force acting on the box? Express your answer in unit vector notation.
B What is the displacement of the box after 5.0 seconds. Remember that displacement is a vector and therefore your result needs to be expressed in unit vector notation.
(The figure shows the magnitudes of the forces and their angles relative to each other. It is up to you to define a coordinate system.)
45 degrees F2 = 5 NExplanation / Answer
Net force in x-direction = F1 - F2 cos 45
= 6 - 6cos 45
= 1.75 N
net force in y-direction = 5 - 6sin 45 = 0.757 N
net force = -1.75i - 0.757j
acceleration = F/m = -1.75i - 0.757j / 50
= -0.035 i - 0.015 j
S = ut + 0.5at^2
S = 0 + 0.5*(-0.035i - 0.015j)*5^2
= -0.44i - 0.19j
