Problem 2, Circle the one alternative that best completes the statement or answers the que (Each 6 points) (a) Show that the equivalent capacitance ofthree capacitors in sees can be writen as 3.00 F 6.00 F b) For the system of four capacitors shown in figure below,find G) the equivalent capacitance of the system, (ii) the charge on each capacitor, (ii) the potential difference across each 2.00 F 4.00 F 90.0 V

Explanation / Answer

a) in a series circuit total charge remains same across all the capacitors

assume that voltage across there capacitors are v1,v2 and v3

v = v1+v2+v3

from the relation q = cv

v = q/c

q/c = q/c1+q/c2+q/c3

1/c = 1/c1+1/c2+1/c3

2) 3 and 6 are in sereis

so c36 = 3*6/3+6 = 2*10^-6 F

2 and 4 are in series

c24 = 2*4/2+4 = 1.33*10^-6 F

c to0t = c24+c36 = 3.33*10^-6 F

d) q = cv = 3.33*10^-6*90 = 299.7*10^-6 C

in parallel voltage is same

so v24 = v36 = 90 V

q24 = 1.33*10^-6*90 = 119.7*10^-6 C

q36 = 2*10^-6*90 = 180*10^-6 C

IN SERIES Q IS SAME

SO Q2 = Q4 = 119.7*10^-6 C

Q3 = Q6 = 180*10^-6 C

C) V2 = 119.7/2 = 59.85 V

V4 = 119.7/4 = 29.925 V

V3 = 180/3 = 60 V

V6 = 180/6 = 30 V
