Question
The charge per unit length on a long, straight filament is -87.4 µC/m.
(a) Find the electric field 10.0 cm from the filament, where distances are measured perpendicular to the length of the filament. (Take radially inward toward the filament as the positive direction.)
MN/C
(b) Find the electric field 36.5 cm from the filament, where distances are measured perpendicular to the length of the filament.
(c) Find the electric field 120 cm from the filament, where distances are measured perpendicular to the length of the filament.
Explanation / Answer
Solution- From the question we have linear charge density = -87.4 *10-6 C/m
We know , for a linear charge wire , Electric field at a distance of R m is
E =-/2R directed inwards
a )Now putting the values in the equation
E =87.4*10-6 / (2**8.85*10-12*0.10) = 15.72MN/C
b) Putting R = 0.365 m
E =87.4*10-6 / (2**8.85*10-12*0.365)
E =4.31 MN/C
c) Putting R = 1.2 m
E =87.4*10-6 / (2**8.85*10-12*1.2)
E =1.31 MN/C
