Question
In the picture below, the two wires carry current i1 and i2, respectively, with positive current to the right. The charge q is positive and has velocity v to the right.
TRUE/FALSE
A) If i1 is greater than i2, then the force on q is north.
B) If i2 = 0 and i1 is greater than zero, then the force on q points into the page.
C) If i2 = - i1 then the force on q equals zero.
D) If i1 = 0 and i2 is greater than zero, then the magnetic field near charge q points into the page
E) If i1 = - i2, then the wires repel each other.
F) If i1 = 0 and i2 is greater than zero then the force on q is south.
G) If v = 0, then the force on q is zero.
9 2Explanation / Answer
Solution:
A) True , As the net magnetic field is inside so using flemming's left hand rule we can say the force will be in north direction.
B)False , As if i2 = 0 , then net magnetic field will be into the page so force will be in north , same as above.
C) False , if i2 = -i1 then net magnetic field will Not be zero so F is Not 0 (Negative sign will change the direction of current)
D) False , if i2 is not zero then magnetic field on charge q points out of the page( use Right hand thumb rule)
E)True
F) True ( use flemmings right hand rule)
G) Using F = qvB sin(theta) if v = 0 then force = 0 (True)
