Question

Read the situation given and evaluate the bolded statements; are they true or false? Either way, please explain your answer.

1) If you compress a spring by grabbing both ends and pushing them in toward one another, while keeping the spring in the same position in front of you the entire time, the total impulse that you impart on the system is zero, because the impulse imparted by your right hand on the system cancels the impulse imparted by your left hand on the system, since they move in opposite directions.

2) A horizontal spring is attached to the wall on one side a given mass on the other side. Assume the mass can slide on a frictionless surface. Suppose you pull the mass so that the spring is stretched out and then you release it, so that the mass starts moving towards the spring’s unstretched position. In this situation, the impulse imparted on the spring-mass system by the force of the wall on the spring is zero, since the wall does not move during this process.

Explanation / Answer

1) true

Because the impulse is a vector quantity and its direction is in the direction of force so the forces on spring is in opposite direction the impulse cancels the effect of each other.

Impulse = force x time of force applied

2) True

The wall doesn't applying any force on spring here only the restoring force of spring is acting, so wall has much high potential energy than springs potential energy so wall doesn't move.
