Explanation / Answer
a) With5.3 million people, Singapore's per capita GDP is $55,182 in 2013, well above the World Bank’s high-income group threshold. Singapore is a prolific signatory and was among the first countries to sign a bilateral FTA with China (in 2008). Singapore is a substantial investor in China, cumulative Singapore FDI in China stood at $44 billion ( 41% of all ASEAN investment) between 2003 and 2013. Singapore is investing in China across various industries: Logistics, finance, electronic information, equipment manufacturing, chemicals, automobiles and motorcycles, consumer services, and pharmaceuticals.
b) In terms of trade, China is the second largest export ($48,369$, 11.8%) and largest import ($43689, 11.7%) partner of Singapore. About one-third of its imports and exports consist of fuels and petrochemicals (as Singapore is an energy transit hub). These products, however, play less of a role in Singapore’s trade with China, over half of which—on both the export and import sides—consists of machinery and electrical products.
