If you place a jar of perfume in the center of a room and remove the stopper, you will soon be able to smell the perfume throughout the room. If you wait long enough, will all the perfume molecules ever be back in the jar at the same time? Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

heat engine takes heat from the source, does work and delivers the remaining to the sink whereas pump pulls heat from the sink with work expelled and heat is transferred to the hot source.

Heat engine : Picture a, b and c

your calculation for the efficiency of the engine is correct for all the three values

Heat Pump : Picture e and f

Picture d is wrong becaue all the heat taken from the sink and source cannot be converted to work which is obsolete

21)

The molecules of the perfume is spread out due to the phenomenon of diffusion. Entropy is the measure of the orderlyness. Here the order of arrangment of the molecules is spreadout due to diffcusion so entropy of the system is increases. In other words, the perfume molecules never come back into the jar. This is irreversible process where entropy of irreversible process increases.
