Question

3. You throw a piece of soft elay with mass 0.358 kg at a 2.40 kg block of wond that is sitting on slick, frictionless, ice and is initially at rest. The clay sticks to the block of wood. You accelerate the clay that is initially at rest to a speed of 9.75 m/s. During throw you are in contact with the clay for 0.426 seconds. a. What average force did you exert on the clay while throwing it? this b. What is the velocity of the clay and block after the collision? c. Is this an elastic, inelastic or totally inelastic collision? d. What is the energy of this system before the collision? e. Describe the energy after the collision.

Explanation / Answer

3. (A) change in momentum = F t

0.358 (9.75 - 0) = F(0.426)

F = 8.19 N

(b) Applying momentum conservation,

(0.358 x 9.75) + (2.40x 0) = (2.40 + 0.358) v

v = 1.27 m/s

(c) totally inelastic collision.

(d) Ki = 0.358 x 9.75^2 /2 = 17 J

(e) Kf = (0.358 + 2.40) (1.27^2) / 2 = 2.22 J
