3. Itotal points: 61 Assume the heigh starts from the rest at the top. The roller-coaster and the riders have a Take the coordinate system in such a way that at the bottom of the t of the hill in figure below is 41 m, and the roller-coaster e gravitational potential energy of the roller-conster at the top of the hill. (3 points) (b) Find the speed of the roller-coaster at the bottom of the hill, assuming conservation of mechanical energy. (3 points) BONUS POINT: Now consider that there is friction present in between the roller-coaster and he track. For the same motion as considered above, would the speed at the bottom of the hill acrease, decrease or remain the same? (1 point)Explanation / Answer
According to the given problem,
a)
G.P.E = mgh = 1055*9.81 *41 = 424.3kJ
b) Using the conservation of energy principal,
K.E = G.P.E
1/2mv2 = 424.3 kJ
v = 28.4 m/s
c) The velocity will decrease as friction force act opposite to the motion reducing the Energy by the time it reaches.
Ans: Kinetic friction, is a non-conservative force, because it acts to reduce the mechanical energy in a system
