Question

In this week's experiment, your cart accelerated up the ramp while pulled by a counterweight. Choose the best description of what happened to the acceleration of the cart right after the counterweight hits the floor compared to right before the counterweight hit the floor. (Assume that the counterweight is massive, at least twice as massive as the cart, and the angle is small, less than 30 degrees, as in the lab.)

a. The acceleration of the cart remains the same.
b.The acceleration of the cart becomes zero because there is no tension in the string.
c.The magnitude of the acceleration changes, but its direction remains the same.
d.It is not possible to know without more information.
e.Both the magnitude and direction of the acceleration change.

Explanation / Answer

the acceleration of the cart will not remains same as net force on the car will change

initially net force was tension - mg * sin(theta) but after it'll be mg * sin(theta)

acceleration of the cart will not becomes zero because despite there is no tension in the string there is a gravitaion force(mg sin(theta)) acting on the cart

magnitude of the acceleration changes, but its direction will also change as direction of net force will change

so,

option e is appropriate option

both the magnitude and direction of the acceleration change
