Question

A plastic ball is thrown at 80 meters per second with a 90 degree angle with respect to the horizontal direction. The plastic ball goes up for a few secondsand ten down for a few seconds. Since it was a plastic ball, it was bounced back up in the air but with 75 percent of the velocity it started with and then bounced back again with 75 percent of that and so on. So, the ball was thrown with 80 meters per second; when it was bounced back up in the air, the velocity was 60 meters per second; when it was bounced again, and then the velocity was 45 meters per second and so on. Calculate the total hang time of the ball until it lost all its velocity.

Explanation / Answer

Total time = 2v/g + 0.75*2v/g + 0.75^2 *2v/g +0.75^3×2v/g....and so on

= 2v/g* (1+ 0.75 + 0.75^2 + 0.75^3....)

= 2*80/9.8*(1/(1-0.75))

= 65.3 s answer
