Question

7. With the "big giant, hovering, constant velocity" puzzle we discussed in class, say our room has 3g up jets (meaning without gravity they would accelerate our room up at 3g) acting on it right now. (a) In terms of your mass m, and earth's gravity g, what would the normal force pushing up on you in your seat be? (b) What would the acceleration of the room with respect to the earth be? [12.5 points] 8. Starting from Newton's 2nd law, (a) what is the velocity v as a function of time t of an object of mass m that starts at rest and is falling in near-earth gravity (g = & = 9.8 m/s) with a friction

Explanation / Answer

foces acting on person on seat are gravitation force, force due to upward acceleration

equation of motion of person will be

normal force - mg = ma

here acceleration is 3g

normal force - mg = m * 3g

a) normal force = 4mg

acceleration of room with respect to earth will be 3g + g

b) acceleration of room with respect to earth will be 4g as it has to overcome earth's downward gravitaitional force
