Question 1, chap 110, sect 7. part 1 of 210 points A simple pendulum consists of a 3.3 kg point mass hanging at the end of a 2.8 m long light string that is connected to a pivot point. 2 The acceleration of gravity is 9.81 m/s a) Calculate the magnitude of the torque (due to the force of gravity) around this pivot point when the string makes a 3.2° angle with the vertical. Answer in units of N·m Question 2, chap 110, sect 7. part 2 of 29 points b) Repeat this calculation for an angle of 18.6 Answer in units of N·m

Explanation / Answer

1. (A) toque = m g L sin(theta)

= 3.3 x 9.81 x 2.8 x sin(3.2)

= 5.06 N-m

2. torque = 3.3 x 9.81 x 2.8 x sin18.6

= 28.9 N -m
