Question

Chapter 09, Problem 064 Your answer is pertially correct. Ty again. A steel ball of mass 0.840 kg is fastened to cord that is 74.0 cm long and fixed at the far end. The ball is then released when the cord is horizontal, es shown in the figure. At the bottom of its path, the ball strikes 3.30 kg steel block initielly at rest on a frictionless surface. The collision is elastic. Find (a) the speed of the ball and (b) the speed of the block, both just after the collision Unitt m/s (a) Number T2.26 (b) Number 25.1 Unitt m/s

Explanation / Answer

a) Kinetic energy = potential energy

.5 m v^2 = mgh

v = sqrt (2gh) = 3.8 m /sec

b) From momentum conservation:

mv = (m+M)v

.84 * 3.8 = 4.14* v

or v = .77 m/sec
