LAB 11. MEASUREMENT OFg Question: Consider the following example data for timing pendulum swings which further emphasize the effect on uncertainty due to how the period is measured. Assume that the experimental standard deviation for the experimenters' timing of pendulunn swings is s = 0.04 s. In experiment A the experimenters timed 12 sets of 10 swings, and in experiment B the experimenters timed 1 set of 120 swings. Results of Experinnent A: Average time for 10 swings = 28.39 s. Results of Experiment B: Time for 120 swings = 340.61 s. Determine the value of the period for each of these experiments including the un- certainty 1.

Explanation / Answer

Period from experiment A

T = 28.39 / 10 = 2.839 sec

Period from experiment B

T = 340.61 / 120 = 2.838 sec

Now, the standard deivation tells us two values of a particular reading - one will be minimum and other one will be maximum. As standard deivation is given as 0.04 sec

Then it wcan be written as

for experiment A

2.839 +/- 0.04 sec. In this case, minimum time period can be 2.839 - 0.04 = 2.799 sec and maximum time period can be 2.839 + 0.04 = 2.879 sec
