Question

19. During winters in Wisconsin, my grandfather used to store apples in a chest freezer in his garage. The freezer wasn't plugged in; it was just a convenient insulating container. To keep the apples from freezing, he put Page 1 of 2 PHY 114 Homework 5 Fall 2017 a light bulb in the freezer to provide a little bit of heat. It turned out that this kept the apples a little too warm, so he decided to add a second light bulb Was this a reasonable idea? How did he configure the two light bulbs to achieve his goal?

Explanation / Answer

Yes this is reasonable to put one more bulb to increase the amount of heat.
We know that the heat produced will be = I2Rt
where I is current , R is resistance of bulb and t is time for which bulb is on.
Now if we add one more bulb the the heat release will be = 2I2Rt
But for this important thing is that the current must be the same.
If we connect the second bulb in series then the current will drop.
But if we connect the second bulb in parallel connection then the voltage drop across both bulb will be same.
And since their resistances are same therefore their current will be same.
hence we will connect another bulb in parallel connection .
