Question

Having reached the bridge, and unlocked the hatchway, Defiance Drake attempts to open the door, but meets some resistance (the door swings inward, thus she is pulling on the door). She inspects the environment panel on the side of the hatch and finds that while the area she is in is pressurized to 1 atmosphere, the bridge apparently is at vacuum. If she can exert a force of 6000N on the door, can she open the hatch? Explain how you know. The hatch, as shown in the previous problem, has an area of approximately 0.62 m^2.

Explanation / Answer

Given

hatch acted by the force F = 6000 N on an area A = 0.62 m^2

the hatch has environmental pressure is P1 = 1 atm = 1.01*10^5 Pa

if the applied pressure on the hatch by the person is greater than P1 then hatch will open

P2 = F/A = 6000 /0.62 N/m2 = 9677.419 Pa

so she can not open the hatch with the applied force on it.
