Question

Having reached the bridge, and unlocked the hatchway, Defiance Drake attempts to open the door, but meets some resistance (the door swings inward, thus she is pulling on the door). She inspects the environment panel on the side of the hatch and finds that while the area she is in is pressurized to 1 atmosphere, the bridge apparently is at vacuum. If she can exert a force of 6000N on the door, can she open the hatch? Explain how you know. The hatch, as shown in the previous problem, has an area of approximately 0.62 m^2.

Explanation / Answer

Pressure at the front side of the door = 1 atm = 1 * 105 N/m2

Pressure at the rear side of the door = 0 (as bridge aparently is at vacum)

pressure difference between front and rear side of the door = 1 * 105 - 0 = 1 * 105 N/m2

Area = 0.62 m2

So maximum resistance force acting , Rmax = pressure difference * area

   R max = 1 * 105 * 0.62 = 62000 N

now force exerted by her = 6000N

Since force applied by her is less than maximum resistance force developed due to pressure difference, she can't open the hatch
