Question
ust show and explain all turn in this sheet. Please show each step in calculations 1. What two conditions must be met for an object to be in equilibrium? What is meant by the term "lever arm?" (5pts) 2. (a) What is meant by the "center of mass" of an object? (b) Do you think the center of mass of the torque bar used in Experiment 4 is at the center of the bar? (c) If not, to which end is it the closest, L or R and why? (Refer to the figure in Experiment 11 to answer this question.) (10 pt) 3. For the torque bar on the figure bellow, write symbolic equations for static equilibrium conditions, choose point A for pivot. Make sure to use the right coordinate system. What additional complication arises if you choose pivot point at the left end of the torque bar? State if torque around points A, D and center of mass is positive, negative or zero. Explain your answers. (10 pts) 4. Find the position of the center of mass if torque bar used in Question 3 has mass 0.785 kg. The length of the torque bar is 53.0 cm, point A is at 8.00 cm and point D at 45.0 cm from the left end. The tensions in left cord is 5.30 N and values for eA·@pand ee are respectively 63.0. 74.9° and 5.0°. (15 pts) 5·The figure shows a bar suspended from a pivot p with a calibrated spring attaching the bar to the wall. The length of the bar is 0.970 m, its mass is 0.775 kg, and the tension measured by the calibrated spring is 3.25 N. Use the standard coordinate system with +x to the right and ty up the page. (a) Write the symbolic equation that represents equilibrium for the forces in the direction, (b) Write the symbolic equation that represents equilibrium for the forces in the y - direction. (c) Write the symbolic equation that represents equilibrium for the torques around point p. Please use 45.0 degrees, 63.0 degrees, g 9.80 m/s, and calculate the horizontal and vertical components of the force the pivot exerts on the bar and the location of the center of mass of the bar, measured from the pivoted end.(20 pts)Explanation / Answer
Answer1.
Two Condition for a object to be in equilibrium
1.The first condition is that the net force on the object must be zero for the object to be in equilibrium.
2.The second condition necessary to achieve equilibrium involves avoiding accelerated rotation.A rotating body or system can be in equilibrium if its rate of rotation is constant and remains unchanged by the forces acting on it.
"Lever Arm"-
The lever arm is defined as the perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation to the line of action of the force. This is a concept that applies to rigid body motion most specifically. A lever arm (or moment arm) is related to torque of a force about a particular point, for instance. A very simple case would be that of a wrench being used to take a bolt off the top of a fire hydrant. The person applying force to the wrench will apply it (most likely) perpendicular to the wrench itself, towards the end. The moment arm in such a simple case would be the distance from the bolt to the point of application of the force.
