Question
Which of the following is false regarding metabolism? In Metabolism, food is oxidized. Metabolism is a fast process requiring only a few steps During metabolism, energy is captured by ATP Metabolism wastes very little energy as heat Metabolism involves catabolic and anabolic reactions Catabolic reactions are the opposite of anabolic reactions. True False All food provides the same amount of energy when metabolized True False Which of the following is incorrect? A carboxylic acid is a highly oxidized compound. A highly oxidized compound can provide more energy in metabolism than a compound with oxidation. Oxidation releases energy. Energy is neither created and destroyed in metabolism. Fats are at a lower oxidation state than carbohydrates, True False Hydrolysis of ATP (to form ADP) requires energy True FalseExplanation / Answer
Answer 1. Metabolism wastes very little energy as heat is a false statement. Because as per law of entropy or the 2nd law of thermodynamics, the process of metabolism involves a loss of energy. These energy which is inturn lost in the form of heat. Hence the fourth statement is incorrect.
Also the second statement that the metabolism is a fast process and requires very steps should also be considered incorrect. As the rate of metabolism varies from person to person. Some may be slow metabolisers, whereas on the contrary some may be fast metabolisers.
a) In Metabolism the food is oxidised, the oxidation of foods occurs during the first phase of metabolism which is known as catabolism. During the oxidative phosphorylation step of catabolism food undergo oxidation and yields electrons. These electrons functions as a source of energy, which is inturn used in the process of chemiosmosis or ATP generation. Energy extraction take place through the electron transport chain.
c) Adenosine Triphosphate is an energy rich compound composed of adenine and a ribose sugar. During the process of catabolism carbohydrates are broken down to glucose, proteins to amino acids and lipids to fatty acids. The enzymes and coenzymes produce further more complex compounds which break down to release energy. The energy is captured by ATP
Answer 2 The statement is true as catabolism and anabolism are exact opposite of each other. Catabolism is a break down procedure where molecules are broken down to liberate energy whereas in anabolism the broken molecules are combined to form complex products.
Answer 3. The statement is false as all food does'nt provide equal energy when metabolised. Fats provide more energy when metabolised as compared to protiens and carbohydrates.
Answer 4. Option 2 is incorrect as the less oxidised one provides more energy than the highly oxidised ones as the energy extracted through the Electron Transport pathway provides more energy due to the less oxidised ones.
Answer 5. The statement is true fatty acids have an oxidation state of -2 to -3 because of prescence of more carbon atoms in it, hence the prescence of oxygen atoms increases the affinity of electrons towards oxygen. The electrons migrate and release energy. Carbohydrates have an oxidation state of +1 to -1.
Answer 6. The statement is false, because the hydrolysis of ATP to ADP does not requires energy but releases energy.
