Question

Two masses, M1-2.0 kg and M2-0.69 kg, are at with a compressed sp force on M1 as a function of time is shown. Find the speed of M2 when t= 65.0 ms. Force Due to Spring st on an air-track with a compressed spring between them. The spring is released; the Points:1 y Newton's 3rd Law, since the spring is an internal force, the force on M1 is the same SIZE as the force on M2, and thus both receive the same S1ZE impulse. The spring has negligible mass, and can be considered to be attached to one of the masses Send Feedback Tries 2/40 Previous Tries Post Discussion 0

Explanation / Answer

At the given time, Force on m1 = 40 N

impulse on m1 till the given time = area under the curve

impulse = F*t where F is average force till the given time.

= 46* 0.065 = 2.99 Ns

Same impuse is transferred to m2 also but in opposite direction,

m2v2 = 2.99

v2 = 2.99/m2 = 2.99/0.69 = 4.333 m/s answer
