Question

Find the kinetic energy of the objects in the following scenarios: a) A cosmic pion of mass 135 MeVic flies through outer space at a speed of 9.19 x103 km/s. See the hint for help converting MeVIc to kg. Number k- 11 2.403 × 10-28 b) A cheetah weighing 6.20 x10? N chases a gazelle at a speed of 33.1 m/s. Number c) A truck weighing 3.44 short tons speeds down the road at 69.6 mph. Number d) An asteroid of mass 2.57 x107 kg buzzes the Earth at a speed of 11500 mph. Number K-IL Hint O Previous Give Up & View Solution ) Check Answer O Next Exil

Explanation / Answer

i) 135 MeV/c2 = 2.4066 x 10^(-28) kg

v = 9.19 x 10^6 m/s

k.e = (0.5)2.4066 x 10^(-28)[9.19 x 10^6]² = 101.63 x 10^(-16) J

ii) mass = 620 / 9.81 = 63.2 kg

k.e = (0.5)(63.2)(33.1)² = 34621.72 J

iii) v = 69.6 m/h = 31.11398 m/s , m = 3440 kg

k.e = 0.5 x 3440 x [31.114]² = 1.67*10^6 J

iv) v = 11500 m/h = 5140.96 m/s , m = 2.57*10^17 kg

k.e = 0.5 x 2.57*10^17 x [5140.96 ]² = 3.4 x 10^24 J
